MLS Next 2006: SLSG Defeats St. Louis City

AM Anthony Rolando holds off a challenge by Omar Cilic in the 5-4 result with Joyner’s late goal the difference on November 13, 2021

The first Derby games between the St. Louis City SC and St. Louis Scott Gallagher programs were played Saturday November 13 in front of good crowds at WWT Soccer Park. The U16 (2006) match saw SLSG earn the points with a dramatic late winner by Mykhi Joyner in the 5-4 result. The nightcap, featuring the U17 (2005) boys saw the visiting City squad win 6-1. You can see Joyner’s game-winner in a video below. MLS Next St. Louis Derby Results

The game started quickly Saturday with SLSG getting down the left side as they forced a turnover in their offensive third. Likely Joyner down the left side and his ball through the box was finished by Giesing to open the scoring in the 1st minute! Ten minutes later attacking midfielder Jack DiMaria picked up a loose ball following a free kick into the box, scoring through the crowd just inside the right upright.

City got their first lead of the game when Tyson Pearce, the right back, picked up a ball near the center circle and made a weaving run all the way into the box before slotting his shot home. Mykhi Joyner drew SLSG even soon afterwards after collecting a ball before breaking into the box and finishing past the keeper. Celebrations ensued. City used a counter to get into the box again and the ball through the six yard box was tapped in by Jackson Delkus at the far post minutes later to retake the lead at 3-2.

Gallagher were able to tie the score a few minutes later following a handball in the box by City, leading to Joyner’s second goal of the game, this from the penalty spot. A remarkable defensive play by DM Eddie Stewart who cleared a ball off the line behind his keeper kept the score knotted a 3-3 going into halftime.

Scoring was lower in the second half as teams adjusted to high pace and pressing but City were able to take their third lead of the game about 30 minutes in with a strong run down the right side by Jackson Delkus. The defender did a good job of keeping up with Delkus somehow but as he pulled up he found a trailing player who one-timed his shot from the edge of the box. Video

SLSG fought back once again, tying the game 4-4 on Luke Ponciroli’s header following an initial save by Nick Bishop on Joyner’s one touch shot. Ponciroli celebrates

The game winner was scored by Mykhi Joyner on a set piece, as Buebendorf hit a free kick from the far touch line that was initially headed wide by the defense by picked up on the edge of the box by Stoddard. He in turn found Joyner who was allowed a couple of simple touches outside the box before he unleased a left-footed rocket that went in off the underside of the crossbar. Pandemonium ensued with the referee having to clear the field of the crowd that invaded the pitch.

One thought before moving on to the next match. The City lads have established a reputation for their pressing game and their pace. It seemed to me that the final 30 minutes didn’t reflect that well established model as it was SLSG that was working at a higher rate. Did they bring on enough fresh legs to maintain the level they need or was it something else?

Celebrate properly after the final whistle although knocking down the AR is not cool!

SLSG wins dramatic U-16 derby 5-4 vs their new MLS City rivals! The victory was secured by an 89th minute winner and the SLSG youth supporters went crazy! City won the U17 game. Overall both clubs respected each other all night making STL soccer stronger then ever. #SLSG pic.twitter.com/4e8AxMpsba

SLIDESHOW – U16 Derby Game

2005 (U17) Boys

I departed after the first half to the warmth of my truck (still shivering after the 30 min ride home) Saturday but by then City had established a 4-0 advantage. Nathan Ferguson opened the scoring on a ball from Miguel Perez who also appears to be the team choregrapher. The pictured celebration came after the second goal, scored by Aaron Heard who picked up a loose ball in the box, took a pair of touches to his right before sending his shot back to the near post.

Ferguson scored his second on a header as the keeper was caught in no-man’s land. He scored his third, the team’s fourth, from Anthony Faupel’s square ball to the near post and a one-time finish by the forward. City scored a PK in the second half before SLSG got one back on a corner kick while Heard added a second against a 10 man SLSG. A Red Card, SLSG #37 as he gets his second yellow for a jersey tug. His first came late in the first half when he hit a dead ball out toward the Louligan’s along the end line for which he immediately apologized but the ref justifiably called the foul. The score could have been much higher but Aaron Heard had two breakaways in the first half that did not lead to goals as his shots were off target.

For more on both games, I’ll reference you to the game report from St. Louis City

Happy Birthday to @ajpalazzolo98 (his 24th) as he prepares for his @mlsnextpro season with @stlcitysc
A bit of @stlcityacademy news - @mykhi_joyner is joining the U17 squad from SLSG. He's the lad that struck the late winner for the U16 SLSG team when they won the derby game in November. A very bright talent.
New Twitter account for this lad where he's posted a highlight video and it now also includes the goal he scored against Chicago to open the season and was the first goal for the Academy.
A reminder to make sure everything is charged up in case the weather causes outages
